motivated by an interest in understanding the deep structural forces that drive geologic formations, this project sought to develop a process of formation and a resulting form that were integrally linked across various scales. formation, from site to space to surface, are driven by a fundamental system of forces which informed the overall site strategy, interior programatic organization and surface articulation. the result is fluid formation, operating across scales, driven by deep structural forces, just as is the case with natural geologic formations.

characteristics differentiating hotel and residential configurations have been identified and ideal units that embody these traits were designed. These ideal units are topologically identical, allowing for the creation of a gradient of change mediating the intensive differences between the programatic extremes in order to explore the transitional space that lies between. The cellular system is disrupted by public program at various scales and intensities. The final formation is a field of change, full of robust hybrid conditions with public space layered throughout resulting in a cohesive yet varied landscape of experience.

by constantly mining the digital cloud to extract the thoughts, identities and feelings of its inhabitants, cloud culture can become knowledgeable about its users and animate itself to reflect their collective sentiments. this yields a dynamic architectural space that provides an ever shifting palette of sensory experience. the result is a fluid relationship in which the users of the space and the space itself are suspended in a feedback loop, each influencing the mood of the other. cloud culture, therefore, is the dynamic manifestation of the connections and sentiments of the network of users within the space.

in the shadow of the manhattan bridge in brooklyn’s dumbo, a neighborhood with a rich industrial past & now a center for the arts, this business incubator draws on the neighborhood's past, present and future. community outreach programs are layered with research incubation to create robust hybrid conditions. starter incubator space, researching aquatic advanced materials, is provided looking out over the east river. research pods are plugged into the system as required by research teams. as lines of research grow and branch connections are made with other teams creating opportunities for collaboration

the privately owned public space at citicorp plaza is a rarely successful example of its type in the center of midtown manhattan. the objective of this intervention is to capitalize on that success and expand on it, creating synergies through layered hybrid programmatic conditions. an integrative design approach was employed, marrying a complex aggregated system with site & program, creating something new which is born of the dna of the three inputs.

the site organization is a composite of a complex run-off gathering system and bioswale oriented by the contextual grid, and synergistic program elements floating above which are oriented according to the solar grid. the program involves a boathouse, exercise facilities & educational center.
